A focused renovation makes strategic improvements to a historically distinguished San Francisco home.
Situated on a beautiful site in the prestigious Pacific Heights neighborhood, this historic Victorian home suffered from the common ailments of its period: segregated rooms that did not take full advantage of the amazing views of San Francisco Bay. A strategic renovation of the kitchen and family room opens up the connection between them and extends them to capture those views.
The design reinterprets the historic character of the home with refined respect. The extensions of the kitchen and family room are contemporary interpretations of the traditional San Francisco bay, their windows oversized to broaden the view. Similarly oversized pivot doors allow an easy transformation from casualness to formality. The refined detailing of the kitchen, with its expansive island for communal gathering, echoes. And the material and color palette of the kitchen offers an understated contrast to the dark wood panels of the family room.
